94 High Street Vault

94 High Street Southampton SO14 2AA

Accessed via a metal spiral staircase from the High St, then two stone steps into the vault. The biggest, and one of the oldest, vaults in Southampton, built to store the King’s wine at a time when the port was at the centre of the wine trade. During the Second World War the vault was used as a large air-raid shelter. Size: 17m x 6m x 4.8m high at highest point.

Duke of Wellington

Duke of Wellington

36 Bugle Street Southampton

Sat
The Duke of Wellington on Bugle Street is one of Southamptons most recognisable pubs. According to Historic England, the Duke of Wellington building was constructed using the remains of an existing house, which had been built circa 1220 by Benedict Ace, an early Mayor of Southampton. According to that source, the building was badly damaged by the French and Genoese during their murderous raid in 1338. However, according to the same source, a brewer named Rowland Johnson used the old building to construct his new establishment, which he called ‘Bere House’, in 1494. The building still has its thirteenth century foundations and cellar.

King John’s Palace is one of the finest surviving examples of Norman architecture in the country. By the 1180s, when the original house was built, Southampton was already an important port. The house was on the quayside where ships loaded and unloaded their cargoes. It was owned by wealthy merchant and Mayor John Wytegod in the 1300s. Following a French raid in 1338, the town’s sea defences were strengthened by order of King Edward III. The door and windows in the front of the house were blocked with stone or converted into gun slits, and it became part of the town’s defensive wall.

The Undercroft is particularly elaborate with its vaulted ceiling, carvings of human heads and large fireplace. Traces of paint have been found in some places so the whole interior was probably once richly painted. As the wine vaults acted as showrooms as well as stores, this might have been designed to impress prospective buyers. The wine was mostly sold wholesale to the butlers of the aristocracy who were sent to Southampton by their masters to buy a cask or two at a time. Size: 10.3m x 6.7m x 3.5m high.
